Ashburton's Mayor Urges Support for the High Street
Ashburton’s Mayor, Donald Distin, with Deputy Mayor, Jenny Giles, have been visiting the local shops and businesses to find out how they have been coping during the Covid-19 pandemic. Alongside Ashburton’s 1199th Portreeve, John Nutley, and Master Bailiff, Sean Wilson, the group spent time talking to business owners to understand the difficulties they are facing in this challenging climate.
Mr Distin said “Covid-19 has had a devastating effect on businesses and they all need our help and support now. It is so important to shop locally as it helps our community to thrive. We were mindful of social distancing and of course we all wore face coverings but it was still a very enjoyable morning visiting our wonderful traders.”
Lydia Wood, chair of Ashburton Chamber of Trade, gave her thanks “The businesses were very grateful for the show of solidarity and the time they took to chat with us. It’s great to see them lead by example, shopping locally and supporting our high street.”
All of Ashburton’s local traders have been working hard to ensure the high street is a safe and welcoming place. The high street has an eclectic mix of independent shops catering for all tastes and occasions and a range of excellent restaurants, cafés and tea rooms showcasing the best of local produce.
